Kayseri, one of the oldest cities in Anatolia, is not only known for its rich historical background but also for its recent cultural transformation projects. One of the most remarkable examples of this transformation is the Meryem Ana Library, currently serving as the Kayseri City Library.

A Historic Building with a New Purpose

The building that houses the Meryem Ana Library was originally used as the Church of Virgin Mary (Meryem Ana Church). Reflecting the multicultural and multi-religious past of Kayseri, this historical structure served as a place of worship for many years. After careful restoration, the building was preserved in line with its original architectural character and repurposed as a modern public library.

This transformation stands as a meaningful example of protecting cultural heritage while adapting it to contemporary social needs.

A Modern Library Experience

Today, Kayseri Meryem Ana Library is more than just a place to read books. It offers a productive and peaceful environment for:

Students conducting academic research,

Individuals seeking a quiet place to study,

Visitors interested in cultural and intellectual activities.

The library features a wide collection of books, study halls, digital resources, and silent reading areas. Experiencing modern library facilities within historic stone walls creates a unique and inspiring atmosphere for visitors.

Cultural and Social Contribution

The Meryem Ana Library plays an important role in enriching Kayseri’s cultural life. Frequently visited by students and young people, the library contributes to lifelong learning and social interaction. Transforming a historic religious building into an educational and cultural space helps build a strong bridge between the past and the future.

A Must-Visit Cultural Landmark

For both local residents and tourists, the Meryem Ana Library is one of the must-see cultural landmarks in Kayseri. Its architectural beauty, historical value, and calm atmosphere make it an ideal destination for those who wish to explore the city’s cultural identity while enjoying a meaningful learning experience.

Tepsi mantısı is a traditional dish unique to Kayseri cuisine, known as an alternative to the famous Kayseri dumplings. Although classic Kayseri mantı is widely recognized, tepsi mantısı is a lesser-known yet deeply rooted dish that has been prepared in local households for generations.

What Is Tepsi Mantısı?

Tepsi mantısı is prepared by layering thinly rolled dough in a large baking tray, adding a minced meat filling between the layers, and baking it in the oven. After baking, it is served with garlic yogurt and melted butter sauce.

This method eliminates the time-consuming process of folding individual dumplings while preserving rich flavor.

Characteristics of Kayseri Tepsi Mantısı

Oven-baked texture that is crispy and filling

Even distribution of minced meat filling

Absorbs yogurt and butter sauce well

Ideal for large family meals

These features make tepsi mantısı a distinctive dish within traditional Turkish cuisine.

Is Tepsi Mantısı Native to Kayseri?

Yes. Tepsi mantısı is originally from Kayseri and holds an important place in local culinary culture. While similar baked dumpling dishes exist in other regions, the most authentic version belongs to Kayseri cuisine.

Can You Find Tepsi Mantısı in Restaurants?

Tepsi mantısı can occasionally be found in:

Home-style restaurants

Local cuisine-focused eateries

However, it is rarely included in tourist menus. Its most authentic and flavorful version is still made at home.

The Role of Tepsi Mantısı in Kayseri Cuisine

Tepsi mantısı reflects the practical and resourceful nature of Kayseri’s culinary tradition. It stands as one of the city’s hidden culinary treasures, offering both tradition and comfort in a single dish.

A Story of Sacrifice from the Classroom to the Battlefield

Kayseri is one of the most significant cities in Türkiye’s National Struggle period due to its great sacrifices. One of the strongest symbols of this sacrifice is the Kayseri High School National Struggle Museum, which represents not only an educational institution but also a generation that gave up its future for the independence of the country.

A Historical Fact: A School Without Graduates

Between 1919 and 1922, many students of Kayseri High School joined the Turkish War of Independence and went to the фронt. As a result, the school could not graduate any students during those years. Young students left their education behind to take part in the fight for national independence.

This historical reality gives Kayseri High School a unique and symbolic place in Turkish history.

Museum Content and Experience

Today, a section of the school building has been transformed into the National Struggle Museum. Inside the museum, visitors can find:

Historical documents and archival materials from the National Struggle era

Photographs and personal stories of students who went to the battlefield

Reconstructions reflecting the classroom environment of that period

Informational panels explaining Kayseri’s role in the War of Independence

The museum powerfully demonstrates that the struggle for independence was experienced not only on the battlefield, but also in schools and young lives.

Historical and Cultural Importance

The Kayseri High School National Struggle Museum offers more than historical information; it conveys strong values such as patriotism, sacrifice, and responsibility. It serves as an educational and emotional space, especially for younger generations, helping them connect with the past.

For anyone visiting Kayseri, this museum is a must-see landmark to better understand the spirit of the Turkish War of Independence.

The Hacı Kılıç Mosque and Madrasa is one of the most important Seljuk-era structures in Kayseri. Built in the 13th century during the reign of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, this structure is notable for being built for both worship and education.

The mosque and madrasa are located within the same complex and reflect the multi-functional architectural understanding of the period. A prime example of Seljuk stonework, the building’s main gate stands out with its geometric decorations and fine details.

The madrasa section was formerly used as an educational center where religious sciences were taught. With its courtyard plan and cells, it exhibits typical characteristics of Seljuk educational architecture. The mosque section, with its simple yet impressive interior design, offers a peaceful atmosphere for worship.

Located close to the city center and easily accessible, the Hacı Kılıç Mosque and Madrasa is an important stop for visitors who want to see the Seljuk heritage up close and spend time in a historical atmosphere in Kayseri.

The Ahi Evran Tradesmen and Artisans Museum is a cultural museum located in the Tacettin Veli Neighborhood of the Melikgazi district in Kayseri. It is established in the lodge (zaviye) where Ahi Evran lived and carried out his services. The museum aims to preserve and promote the philosophy of Akhism (Ahilik), which formed the moral and spiritual foundations of craftsmanship and trade in Anatolia.

History and Restoration

The lodge was founded in the 13th century by Ahi Evran and was opened to visitors as a museum in 2002 by the Kayseri Union of Chambers of Tradesmen and Artisans. In 2022, it was restored and reorganized by the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality in line with modern museology principles. This renovation enriched the building and exhibition areas with digital systems.

Exhibitions and Collection

The museum displays approximately 300 artifacts related to 12 different crafts, including coppersmithing, tinsmithing, blacksmithing, tailoring, barbering, carpet weaving, rope making, leatherworking, and carpentry. Notable items in the collection include Ahi Evran’s leather-tanning stones, hand tools, weaving looms, and various professional instruments. Each section features aphorisms attributed to Ahi Evran, reminding visitors of the ethical values of Akhism.

Cultural Significance

The museum preserves the tangible traces of Akhism, which is considered the foundation of professional ethics and social solidarity in Anatolia. The Akhi tradition represents a social model that promotes honesty, fairness, and sharing in trade, a system that extended into the Ottoman period. Ahi Evran’s life—from leatherworking to leadership among tradesmen—is presented in this museum through both its historical and ethical dimensions.

Current Status

Today, the Ahi Evran Tradesmen and Artisans Museum has received an award from the Association of Historic Towns in the category of “Handicrafts and Craft Museums” and makes a significant contribution to Kayseri’s cultural tourism. Located at Tacettin Veli Neighborhood, 38230 Melikgazi/Kayseri, the museum invites visitors on a journey to the roots of the Akhi tradition.

Hakırdaklı Pide is a traditional pide variety unique to Kayseri, commonly made in local neighborhood bakeries and butcher ovens. Its distinctive ingredient, hakırdak, consists of crispy, fatty pieces of lamb or beef, giving the pide its rich and characteristic flavor.

The hakırdak is mixed with onions and spices, spread over thin dough, and baked in a stone oven. As it cooks, the fat melts into the dough, making the pide both crispy and intensely flavorful. It is usually enjoyed plain, often accompanied by ayran.

Hakırdaklı Pide is especially popular during the winter months and is a familiar sight in Kayseri bakeries in the early morning hours. Rarely found in modern restaurants, it remains a cherished part of Kayseri’s local bakery culture.

For visitors who want to experience the city like a local, Hakırdaklı Pide is one of Kayseri’s most authentic and lesser-known culinary treasures

Aside, also known as Haside, is one of the simplest yet most deeply rooted dishes in Kayseri cuisine. Made with just flour, water, and butter, it dates back to times of scarcity and has been preserved through generations as a home-style comfort food.

Although its ingredients are simple, achieving the right texture requires skill and constant stirring. After cooking, melted butter is poured over the dish before serving. In some households, Aside is prepared as a savory dish with tomato paste, while in others it is served as a sweet version with sugar or molasses.

Aside is commonly found on family tables, especially among older generations, and is mostly enjoyed during the colder months. Modest in appearance but rich in meaning, this traditional dish reflects the essence of Kayseri’s home cooking culture.

For those who want to experience Kayseri cuisine beyond the well-known dishes, Aside is a true local classic worth discovering.
